Help my friend Bob Casper hike for shelter (the homeless)

Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you all in good spirits as we head for the beautiful days of autumn. I’m writing to let you know that on October 19th  Laurie and I will once again be hiking up Mt Diablo (and back down) to raise awareness and funds for homeless families in Contra Costa County. The Hike for Shelter benefits a local non-profit that in my estimation does the best job of combining efficiency with compassion—promoting a hand up, not a hand out philosophy.

Shelter, Inc was founded in 1986 and they provide a full range of services (life skills, occupational counseling, tutoring, day care…etc) for homeless families and veterans, who are facing eviction, living in their cars or have been unable to obtain rental housing. The focus of Shelter is to offer a path to self-sufficiency for those who are willing to work and set goals. 86% of the families entering the Shelter program end their homeless situation permanently. The organization provides a crucial safety net in our community helping over 5,000 men women and children each year.

What can you do to help? Please go to our fundraising page at       http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/teamcasper/hike-for-shelter-2013

We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area. Providing basic safety net needs (food, shelter and education) for families in our community who have temporary issues is not only compassionate, but it allows us to prevent some of the larger and more costly problems (foster care, prison…etc) seen in our state. Please, do what you can, no donation is too small.

Sincerely,

Bob
