Stanford University saw a 9.7 percent increase in its
endowment during the 2013 fiscal year, bringing the Palo Alto school's financial
haul in the last year to $18.7 billion.
The university reported strong
investment returns and new gifts as two major reasons for the increase, which
continues a trend of growth after the 2008 recession, according to a report by the Stanford Daily.
The student news organization
added that many of Stanford's peer institutions nationwide have yet to disclose
their 2013 endowments, though the Silicon Valley university had the fourth
largest nationwide during 2012. Harvard University historically leads the pack and
last year reported a $30 million endowment.
Earlier this year, billionaire
real estate mogul and philanthropist John Arrillaga donated
a record-breaking $151 million to Stanford. But other benefactors have also
shelled out nine-figure sums for the university (see a slideshow of some of the
largest donations here).
Stanford has yet to specify what programs the cash infusion will help fund,
though more financial aid for international students is one area of
interest.
“As funds that we have available
for international students specifically grow, we can continue to admit more
international students with financial aid packages,” Stanford Director of
Financial Aid Karen Cooper told
the Stanford Daily. “We have already made significant improvements just in
the class this fall.”
The Daily notes that 45 international students in the class of 2017 are
getting financial aid — nearly double the number for the class of 2016.
Tuition at Stanford for the
2013-2014 school year is $43,245. As of 2012, Stanford graduates averaged
$18,833 in debt, which is on
par with the statewide average.
