The internet today is a crazy jumble of links. Search Engine Rankings are based on who links to your site and how they link to it. Here are some easy ways to get started building links:
1) Look Up Directories
Google your niche in local directories and add your site to them. If your niche is cooking, search for "cooking" directory, "your city" directory, and "your state" directory. Once you get in to the directories, look to see if your competitors are listed there also.
2) Ask for Reviews
A review from Yelp or Google Places will help your rankings AND will help your sales. Even better is a review from a website or group in your niche market. So, how do you get reviews? Start by looking at your competitors - search "your competitior" reviews or "cooking" letters. The results can be awesome for your business, even if you have to spend some product or services.
3) Check out your Competitors
Look at the links your competitiors have created. Go to www.ahrefs.com or www.majesticseo.com and log in your competitior's website. If you look at the links they have and notice they are partnering with local realty or law professionals, then you reach out to similar tradespeople in your area and do the same thing.
4) Pay It Forward
Do you remember the movie, "Pay It Forward" with Helen Hunt? It works in business, too. If you do favors for people, they will do favors back to you. Favors include: retweeting great information from people in your industry or inserting great information in your newsletter (even if it isn't yours). People will start liking your posts and linking back to your site, especially if you ask nicely from all the folks you've been doing nice things for!
5) Assist a Reporter or Journalist
Check out www.HelpaReporter.com. This site will send out reporter questions, and if you can answer the questions, they'll write a review about your business and LINK to you. This is pinnacle of free publiclity.
6) Keep Doing What you're Doing...
Most likely you have added Google analytics to your site already. That's great. You can see who is sending you traffic now. The best thing to do is to VISIT those pages sending you traffic to understand WHY they linked to your business in the first place. Then you're able to contact similar websites and repeat the process.
7) Find Potential Linkers
Make a list of customers, charities, vendors, trade associations, etc. and use it to visit their pages. If they have a page where it seems appropriate to mention your site, send them an email and ask for a favor. You will be surprised how many people will link to your site if you will reciprocate the favor.
8) Get Credit for Work you've Done
If your business mentioned on the web with NO link? Do a quick search in Google for your business name and double check that the sites that mention you actually LINK to you.
If you got some value out of this article, please pay it forward and link this site to your site :)
