Cisco and Stanford bring back house calls with telemedicine

To date, around 500 Cisco employees have experienced a “virtual exam” with Dr. David Wong or Dr. Justin Ko, two dermatologists who work out of Stanford Hospital & Clinics. Using Cisco’s HealthPresence technology, Stanford doctors are able to mimic an in-person dermatology exam without having patients drive from Cisco headquarters in San Jose to Stanford’s clinic in Redwood City. HealthPresence uses high definition cameras to transmit video between doctors and patients.
“It feels just like you’re in the room with the patient,” Wong said.
For Cisco, the benefits of telemedicine are crystal clear. Not only is Stanford using its HealthPresence technology, the company also saves time and money by offering its employees (and employees’ dependents) on-site care rather than giving time off to go visit a doctor in person.
And for Stanford, the technology allows its doctors to see patients well outside its usual coverage area of Silicon Valley, expanding its patient base to virtually anywhere with a solid Internet connection.
Cisco's HealthPresence technology is currently being used around the world, including deployments for pediatrics in Sergipe, Brazil, and Sichuan, China. The company's biggest competitors in the space include Avaya, which has its own Healthcare Solutions products that provide telemedicine to healthcare organizations. Other providers include Juniper Networks, Hewlett Packard and IBM.
