If the stress of the holidays just makes you want to get the hell out of town, let the Curbed's Guide to Vacation Rentals help. Here's a sampling of our favorite vacation listings to fit every budget and dream location. Since plane tickets continue to be mindbogglingly expensive, these all are within a few hours drive.
Live the beach life with a surf shack in downtown Capitola. At only $157-171/night, you’ll be a 3 minute walk to the beach, plus you get a private hot tub in the backyard and a fireplace in the living room – perfect for after a long day of surfing.
Need a place to host 36 of your closest friends? Skislope in Truckee has you covered. Sure it’ll run you up to $2,499/night, but it includes 8 master bedroom suites, full spa, movie theatre room, and lots of crazy extras
If Tahoe is too pricey, consider one of the other less crowded ski mountains further south, like Bear Valley. This 2br + loft sleeps up to 12 people, is only 25 minutes from the mountain, and will cost you only $100-150/night. Bonus – pets are allowed for no additional fee.
1458 Gertrude Way, Stanislaus National Forest, Arnold, CA 95223
If a (chilly) beachfront rental is more up your alley, consider this award-winning design up in Sea Ranch. Super modern, sleek design coupled with two Eucalyptus tree trunks in the living areas, there are luxury amenities galore. It sleeps 8 for $700/night.
There are so many crazy vineyard estates available for rent it’s kind of ridiculous, so we chose one because it promised a water slide. Factor in the private lake, olive grove, 6 acre vineyard, and wine cave, and $1650-2000/night for 12 people doesn’t sound too bad.
For only $150-200/night this cozy Napa cottage actually sleeps up to 6 people. Since it’s set on a 40 acre farm, they let you bring your horse (in case that’s something you own) and provide you with fresh eggs and seasonal vegetables during your stay. Plus it’s super dog-friendly.
If Spanish Colonial estate is more your speed, consider one of the original homes in Pebble Beach built in 1930. It’s been updated with plenty of amenities while still keeping loads of historic charm…we’d be afraid to even sit on the furniture. It sleeps 10 for $900/night.
