Dear ALAN RUSSELL,

It's the festive time of year again--with cookies and pies, family and fun, dinners and excursions. Even the music of the season is special, filled with traditional songs and carols.

This may be the Symphony's busiest season. From Thanksgiving until shortly after New Year's, we will produce multiple concerts, support the Ballet and other arts groups, and bring a wide range of marvelous music to you, our audience.

First up, we welcome back two outstanding artists for a romantic treat. Three years ago, conductor Gregory Vajda brought us Gypsy Airs, featuring 19-year old violin prodigy Lajos Sarkozi. It's only fitting that this December, he leads the orchestra together with another remarkable young violinist, Mayuko Kamio, the subject of our feature article below.

A week later, the Symphony Chorale's annual 'Carols in the California' will light up the California Theatre. This season it features Too Hot to Handel, an irresistible jazz-gospel take on Handel's The Messiah

Just before New Year's, Bugs, Elmer, Daffy, Wiley E. and more join conductor George Daugherty and the Symphony Silicon Valley to bring you Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II, classic cartoons all with their original classical music scores played live.

There's a lot going on. I hope you find time in your holiday plans for a little holiday music!

FEATURE STORY

Young Spinner of Silken Tones

When our scheduled soloist took ill last season, violinist Mayuko Kamio stepped in as a substitute -- and departed a sensation. Listeners were enthralled; reviews were ecstatic.  Now, she makes a triumphant return to the California Theatre, to play Tchaikovsky's violin concerto: heart-felt, melody-filled, and technically daunting, an ideal showcase for an astonishing artist.  The evening's first half contrasts Mozart's 'most perfect and popular' serenade with Stravinsky's edgy experiment in the elegant style of Mozart's 18th century.

Ms. Kamio won first prize at the Young Concert Artists Auditions at age 13 and made her New York recital debut in 2003.  Just four years later, she won the gold medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The New York Times calls Ms. Kamio's an "exciting young musician" and "a radiant talent," "distinguished by her warmly luxurious, buttery tone and long, seamless phrases."

The head of SONY BMG Masterworks adds, "I was delighted to witness a unanimous standing ovation for her performance.  She will undoubtedly be one of the most inspired and gifted violinists on the international concert circuit."

Ms.Kamio's violin is a 1735 Guarneri del Gesu "Sennhauser", on loan from The Stradivari Society.  It was once owned by the 19th-century virtuoso Joseph Joachim.

ABOUT SYMPHONY SILICON VALLEY

Symphony Silicon Valley is the professional symphony orchestra of San Jose.  Founded in 2002, the nonprofit company has progressed from a daring idea to rapidly become the greater South Bay's premiere orchestra and a notable community success story.  The Symphony's artists, nationally recruited, locally resident, with an average performance tenure in San Jose of over 20 years, are recognized as among the best in the greater Bay Area.  Led by an exciting roster of distinguished guest conductors on the European model, the Symphony is an anchor tenant of San Jose's magnificently restored downtown California Theatre, one of Northern California's most outstanding music halls.  Symphony Silicon Valley is setting an example of an innovative business model in the arts -- market driven and financially conservative, with low overhead and the flexibility to match its programming to its support base.  Besides the Orchestra's core Classics programming, the Symphony's other concerts include Target Summer Pops free music festival, five diverse concerts produced outdoors on the lawn and annually bringing nearly 17,000 people out to enjoy totally free and family-friendly music; and ArtSPARK, the County's new arts education program for all elementary students in grades 3-6. This school year the program will serve 33,000 students.
