Build Trust online with Conent

Build Trust Online with Content

By Keith Ferrazzi
No matter how big technology helps you build your network, no matter how much information you compile, forward motion on your dreams will hit a wall if you can’t build trust.
To build trust online, beyond that limited circle of people you can touch personally, you need to find a way to reveal your humanity in bits and bytes, and to do it so well that you could connect to someone if you were transmitting to them from outer space.
It can be done. It has been done.
Chris Hadfield is a Canadian astronaut who finished up his stint on the International Space Station in 2013, when it was being crowded out of headlines by commercial space efforts like Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic. No one was paying attention—until Hadfield started tweeting about his personal experience of the day-to-day of space station life. One popular video showed what it’s like to cry in space. He broke even bigger (and got people crying on Earth) when he tweeted links to a zero-gravity music video of him performing David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Even Bowie gave him the virtual high-five, a Twitter retweet. Meanwhile, five other astronauts were up there with him. I couldn’t tell you one of their names.
What we’re talking about is content, the one true vehicle for building trust online. Content is how people come to know who you are, what you're about, what you want, what you can provide, whether you’re cool, etc. Articles, blog posts, profiles, status updates—every bit and byte that's produced and associated with you and your name adds up to something.
The Web is no longer just about the present—that crazy driver or this delicious meal. As we share messages, photos and updates, we’re building a data trail about our lives and histories online. We can now tell stories not just about what is happening now, but where we’ve been, what we’ve shared, and what might happen in the future.
Those who figure out the best way to curate all those bits and bytes, and to do so through the right channels at the right time, will create the largest and most productive networks, generate the most and the best opportunities, and be the most prepared to pivot their careers should the need arise.
