invisible man
Ever wondered what it would be like to be invisible?
If you run a business in Australia, there’s a one-in-three chance you already know how it feels. Yes, you read that right.  According to the latest Sensis eBusiness Report, only 66 per cent of SMEs have a website for their business, so with all the customer enquiry and research now happening on the internet they may as well not exist.
In the eyes of Google , one third of small businesses are simply INVISIBLE.
OK so maybe you have a website at least, but chances are your online strategy still sucks. Sorry, but the stats don’t lie. Only about half of those businesses with a website are using social media or engaging in search engine optimisation (SEO). How much enquiry, sales opportunities and revenue are you missing out on?
Clearly LOTS of small and local businesses businesses have a big problem: a poor internet presence with small and shrinking levels of online enquiry. Sound familiar?
Well this post is for YOU.
Below, I reveal how you can score 10 quick hits of Google rank for your local business.
But first, a quick primer for newbies: Google ranks all sites on authority. The Google algorithm is a closely guarded secret, but authority is heavily influenced by the number of sites linking to yours – these are called ‘backlinks’. So, a quick way for you to improve Google rank of your small business is to list your site on various free internet directories that link back to it. Backlinks – get it?
So get your 10 quick hits of Google rank by listing your business on these internet directories, below. The list is not exhaustive, but should produce quick results and only require a time investment of 3-4 hours to complete. OK, here goes…
1. www.Dmoz.org
This is not that well known outside of tech/web geeks, but is hugely influential. Follow the instructions carefully, and your site will then be listed automatically on AOL SearchGoogleNetscape SearchYahoo Search, and hundreds of other sites.
2. Google Places
This is essential. Once you create a Google place listing your business will appear on map results. If you haven’t done this, your competitors almost certainly have. Here’s an example of the businesses listed in Surry Hills 2010.

3. Housenet - your personal profile
OK time for some shameless self-promotion. As you may have gathered, Housenet is a social networking site that connects people to local residents and neighbours in the area. Business people who join and create a profile get a FREE listing in our industry directory. Our profiles are also very Google friendly, especially if you add lots of information about you and your business.

6. Yalwa

7. Google +
You may have heard that Google launched a competitor social network to Facebook a while back? Well you need to be on it. Businesses with Google+ pages get priority in search results – that’s right, you get an advantage over competitors if you create a business page on Google Plus. Get to it!
8. Webnetwork
A relatively new business listing website that appears to be growing fast.
9. Free Business Directory
It is what it says. Get your business on there.
10. Housenet - a page for your organisation
Sorry, another blatant plug here for our site! Creating a page for your business on Housenet, in addition to your personal profile, is recommended. It indexes well with Google, and any members in your suburb will will see updates you make to the page – great for marketing your discounts or special offers to the local community. Here’s an example below of a page done well by our friends at the Royal Albert Hotel in Surry Hills NSW 2010.

Google also ranks sites with active communities of followers on social media sites higher, than those without. So again, a compelling reason to join Housenet and foster an online group of locals following your business.
I hope this helps you! SEO is a huge topic and this post only scratches the surface, so if you have any questions leave a comment. If you found it useful, please share on social media. Thanks!
Cheers, Darren
