Jeffrey Stout, one of the South Bay's top chefs, confirmed plans this week for a new restaurant at Campbell's Pruneyard shopping center. On tap: Orchard City Kitchen.
It's the latest notable restaurant to land in the West Valley city of 40,000. Campbell's main drag, East Campbell Avenue, has been filling up in recent quarters with foodie hot spots, most recently including Ciano's Modern Latin Flavors (founded by the former VP of operations for Specialty's Cafe & Bakery, Mario Lleverino).
The restaurant is going into the 6,200-square-foot space being vacated by Hobee's, which we told you was leaving last week. It's slated to open in spring or summer.
Stout, who lives in Willow Glen, is the former founding chef and chief operating officer for Alexander's Steakhouse in Cupertino and San Franicisco. In an interview Wednesday morning two days after signing the lease, Stout told me more about the concept, why it won't cost you a whole paycheck for a meal, and why Campbell. He spoke to me by phone on the way to pick up the final lease documents from landlord Equity Office.
What's Orchard City Kitchen?
We're doing American cuisine, cooking what we want, what's tasty. It will be small plates, and everything will be priced between $8 and $15, though some verbal items may go up. I want the food to have a brightness about it. It will not be laden with heavy meat glosses and butter. It's feel-good type of cooking.
Talk bar to me.
We will have a full liquor license. The bar program is going to be very important in this restaurant. We're emphasizing on quality and originality. We won't put the tried and true on the menu; if you want a Cosmopolitan, you'll order a Cosmopolitan. But our cocktail list will be clean and concise -- probably 12 cocktails. The prices will be $10-range and no more than $12.
