SF MOMA heads to idyllic Los Altos, thanks to Sergey Brin

People watch as the colors from Spencer Finch's "Back to Kansas" change at sunset. According to the artist, the point of this exhibit is to explore viewers' subjective experience of color, particularly the fading light as the sun slowly disappears over the horizon. All of the colors in the wall painting are based off of the vibrant hues shown in the Wizard of Oz. As the light in the room changes over the course of the day, it shifts the appearance of the colors, eventually muting them as the room grows dark at sunset.

That's what the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art, or SF MOMA, set out to discover more than a year ago when they began talks with the city. Los Altos community development group Passerelle Investment Company — which is bankrolled by Google co-founder Sergey Brin — signed on as lead sponsor for the exhibition.
From quirky photographs of iconic tech industry spaces (including the Googleplex) to multimedia displays and even an off-beat contest, the results of the experiment are now on display at Project Los Altos, which will run from Nov. 9 to March 2 in the city's downtown. The multi-site exhibition is part of the art museum's SF MOMA On the Go series, a roadshow while the museum undergoes a two-year renovation.
"Right away, you realize you've got a problem: How do you sustain a museum?" said SFMOMA Director Neal Benezra at a media preview for Project Los Altos on Nov. 6. With the exhibition in Los Altos, he said the museum sought to "see if we could create a new relationship" with Silicon Valley.
Nine different artists contributed existing or newly-commissioned works for the show, which spans 10 indoor and outdoor spaces. Admission is free and open to the public starting on Nov. 9.
Janet Smith, curator of the SFMOMA On The Go project, said the groups in Los Altos shared an interest in expanding cultural offerings outside major Bay Area metro areas.
