Signature, which has already subleased the majority of the project to a company that operates the private aircraft of Google executives called Blue City Holdings, will begin "round two" of the selection process this week to choose a general contractor for the massive project, said President and COO Maria Sastre.
The location is slated to include 270,000 square feet of hangar space on 29 acres. That would make it the largest so-called fixed base operator facility built in a single phase in the last 30 years.
"From the get-go, we've had incredible interest in the site-development program," Sastre told me Nov. 6. She declined to discuss specific deals with new tenants in the works, but said: "It's incremental business" beyond the Blue City Holdings lease. "We're very excited."
The Signature project is progressing even as the Google executives' jet operator is widely thought to be interested in leasing Moffett Field, where their planes are currently based. The federal government is entertaining bids to lease that facility on a long-term basis.
That doesn't, however, appear to be lessening Google's attraction to San Jose. Ken Ambrose, a representative of Blue City Holdings, told me in a recent email that Blue City is committed to the SJC project and is moving ahead on working drawings and specifications for the San Jose facility.
Signature isn't wasting time in the pre-construction phase. Sastre said Signature received nine responses during the first round of general contractor bidding. The project is expected to create 200 construction jobs and generate about $2.6 million a year for the city in rent.
