Startup Renaissance man Elon Musk paid $6.75 million for a three-bedroom Bel Air home right across the street from the $17 million, seven-bedroom estate he bought in January, according to the real estate site Trulia.
He joins a string of high-powered CEOs buying out their neighbors. My colleague Nathan Donato-Weinstein reported that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently bought out most of his Palo Alto block. And Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer also just plunked down $11 million for a funeral home near her Palo Alto home.
Musk, the founder of PayPal, Tesla Motors Inc. and SpaceX, purchased his new 2,756-square-foot Bel Air home on Oct. 24. The residence includes 4.5 bathrooms, a pool and a private guest cottage. Trulia also reports that "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" actor Gene Wilder lived in the house from 1976-2007.
And Musk's new pad has serious development potential, Trulia adds:
"The home is the perfect location to develop a dream property. It sits on a one acre promontory overlooking a beautiful stream, mature trees and the white sand traps of the 13th green and 14th fairway of the prestigious Bel-Air Country Club Golf Course. It’s likely he’ll either capitalize on the opportunity presented by the new home and build an even more over-the-top mansion, or he’ll raze the existing home and create even better views and privacy for his current home."
