When a venture capital firm is looking for a new CEO to lead one of their portfolio companies, it turns to an executive search firm to find the best match to lead a startup to success.
Brad Stadler is the founder of one such firm, True, which finds executive placements for clients like Accel Partners, Greylock Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital.
True, which has offices in Sunnyvale, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and San Francisco, has also recently made executive placements at Pandora, Twilio and FreshBooks.
Stadler shares his insight on what makes an outstanding startup exec, why some founders succeed as CEO while others get replaced and how Silicon Valley's executive talent compares to the rest of the company.
What are the characteristics you look for when searching for a startup CEO?
I think what we really look for is overall leadership ability. People should want to follow this person. In addition, for companies that are going through the type of growth stage that venture companies are going through, it is really important for those CEOs to have really good market vision and to understand where the space is going, where the product should go and what the other players in the market are doing.
The other thing we look for is someone who has some general management experience at scale. That may be someone with experience at a larger established technology company who has also been involved within an early stage venture company in the past. If that person has never been with an early stage company, it's very hard to predict how they'll react when they join a small firm. They don't have the type of support they'd have in a larger business. It's very hard to just take somebody out of Oracle or Microsoft or Apple and throw them into a 100 person company. You try and look for people who have the blend of all those skills and that's usually the best fit.
