Walmart grocery store confirmed for Stevens Creek

A Walmart Neighborhood Market will go into one of the last remaining empty big-box stores in San Jose, taking over the former Circuit City site at 4080 Stevens Creek Blvd.
Walmart's interest in the roughly 45,000-square-foot store has been rumored for a while. The Bentonville, Ark.-based behemoth applied for tenant improvement permits last year, but never moved on those plans.
Now Walmart is moving forward aggressively with building out the location. Late last month it submitted again for tenant improvements. It also applied for a conditional use permit for off-sale of alcoholic beverages, which is not expected to be a problem given that it is a neighborhood grocery store.
"We are planning a new Walmart Neighborhood Market to better serve our San Jose customers and provide a convenient location for fresh, affordable groceries," Delia Garcia, a Walmart spokeswoman, told me in an email. She said the store would open next year.
Walmart has opened 250 of the grocery stores since the first in 1998, but it is a relative newcomer to San Jose. It only opened its first Neighborhood Market store in the city last fall, at Federal Realty Investment Trust's Westgate mall.
The stores offer groceries, prepared foods, a deli and bakery, some home goods and a pharmacy.
Safeway, based in Pleasanton, dominates in the Bay Area but has seen increased competition in recent years from non-union players such as Walmart, Whole Foods, Sprouts Neighborhood Markets, Sunflower, the Fresh Market.
