There were more startups pitching products that consumers and businesses will never know exist and far fewer "stealthy startups" in Tuesday's Y Combinator Demo Day. But that didn't make it much easier to sort out which to include in this list of top picks.
Sitting through YC's Demo Day pitches is like watching a few hours of "Coming Attractions" at the movies. Lots of teases but it leaves you wanting more — or less — than what you see in the two-and-a-half minutes the founders get to pitch their ideas.
But Y Combinator's track record of picking hit startups like Dropbox, Airbnb and Stripe keeps a stellar group of angels, VCs and famous investors like Joe Montana and Ashton Kutcher coming back.
So here are the companies that caught my attention during Tuesday's pitching marathon. You will probably be hearing more about them in the future.
— SpoonRocket: Their pitch was "hardly polished," according to YC co-founder Paul Graham, but this food delivery startup claims that within weeks of launching it already has a projected annual revenue of $2 million and is growing a clip of 112 percent a week. Founders Anson Tsui and Steven Hsiao deliver either a choice of one meat or one meatless meal for $6 in as little as 10 minutes. They make the meals and run the delivery network themselves. It's a hit in their home base of Berkeley. Now they have to show they can scale. Here's their link.
— Teleborder: This San Francisco startup brings immigration law savvy of giant tech companies to the rest of the business world. They help customers put together documents needed to get foreign talent where they are needed and tracks them to make sure that nothing gets lost in the bureaucracy. Co-founder and CEO James Richards has first-hand experience doing the visa dance as the son of a hotelier from the U.K. and an Indonesian mom. Here's their website.
