Hedge fund operator and travel entrepreneur Brad Gerstner has raised a $75 million venture fund and is moving to Silicon Valley to invest from it.
A spokeswoman told me that Gerstner is moving his family from Boston, where his $600 million Altimeter Capital hedge fund is based, and he will be frequently commuting between coasts.
Altimeter has a new office in Menlo Park and is in the process of finding a permanent location, the spokeswoman said.
Gerstner's startup career has been focused on the travel sector as the founder of Room 77 and as an angel investor in Kayak, Hotel Tonight, Duetto Research, Farecast and SilverRail Technologies. But he told the Tnooz travel blog that his focus with the new fund will be bigger.
"The firm will invest in early- to mid-stage startups in Internet, software, travel and general consumer sectors — the varied mix that Altimeter has always invested in — a lot of it unrelated to travel," he said.
Gerstner told Tnooz the Silicon Valley-based fund gives him "additional firepower."
