Home is a place that is always spoken of with great fondness, but do you actually enjoy being in your particular house, or could you be happier at home? Here are some tips to help you improve your time at home and make it the pleasant sanctuary you’ve always wanted it to be. If you don’t feel like your home is bringing you joy anymore, reach out to The Dawn Thomas Team.
“1. Make your bed- This may sound like an order from your mother, which it likely once was, but truly, making your bed is a quick and simple task that can help your bedroom feel instantly neater, and more homey.
2. We all have a junk drawer, but how about an empty shelf?- It’s important to have a repository for all the odds and ends that accumulate in a household. Most of us have a drawer in the kitchen reserved for these miscellaneous objects, and that’s a good thing. It helps create order out of clutter. In addition to having a junk drawer, consider keeping an empty shelf. Why? It gives your home the feeling of possibility, of still having at least a small space waiting to be filled.
3. Display cherished items where you see them every day- There are items that we love—jewelry from our grandmother, photos of the last camping trip—that we often keep hidden away. Why not pull out the items that make you happy and create a space for them. Hang your favorite necklaces above your dresser; clear a shelf for favorite family photos.
4. Your sense of smell shouldn’t be overlooked!- Many of us neglect a very important sense: smell. A lovely aroma—a citrus candle, cookies in the oven, fresh roses—can change the entire feel of a room. A good smell can provide a feeling of decadence, coziness, even … happiness. Be aware of this overlooked sense and cultivate good aromas around your abode.
5. If you can’t get out of it, get into it- The idea is that we all have to do chores we don’t like, such as washing dishes or cleaning the bathroom. So, if you can’t outsource the chore, to a maid or your kids, try to make the chore fun. Play your favorite music and sing along; listen to a book on your iPod; talk to your friend on the phone. Pretend you’re enjoying this chore, and the feeling of actual enjoyment may just follow.
6. Spend money on things that cultivate experiences in your home- Buy a grill so you can have friends over for a barbeque; a nice reading lamp and chair for a particular corner might create a pocket of calm; and those new martini glasses need to be used by friends!
7. Change burned out bulbs- This is a simple, and some may say, obvious, idea, but you’d be surprised how many people let these little things go for months, even years, at a time. Having a light that doesn’t turn on is just silly, and an aggravation every time you remember that once again you forgot to change the bulb. Keep a ready store of bulbs and change burned out ones right away!”
