Arroz Negro
This week we would like to highlight our most surprising success at Duende. Paul was recently interviewed by Food Arts magazine, where he tells the story of how this dish came to be loved by our customers (click here to read the article) . Our Arroz Negro is cooked much the same way as a paella, with sofrito and bomba rice in a paella pan. Where this differs is when we add squid ink to the boiling rice. This takes the dish on the path to celebrating seafood, perfuming the paella with a briny yet sweet oceanic flavor, creating a perfect vehicle for the amazing seafood we receive from Monterey Fish Market. Throughout the seasons we change this dish to include what is being caught at the moment in the ocean, and also highlight the fresh produce we receive year-round. Our Arroz Negro this week features Petrale sole, Georgia white shrimp, and a refreshing salad of shaved fennel and peppers.

Meet the Winemakers: Dashe Cellars
Sunday, November 24 | 3-5 pm | $15

Michael and Anne Dashe, the makers of the outstanding Dry Creek Zinfandel we have on tap will bring on stage the rest of their production, which includes an Alsatian-style Riesling, a spicy Grenache, several single-vineyard Zinfandels and even a dessert wine, most of them sourced from Sonoma and Mendocino. Chef Paul Canales will display a selection of the cured meats made in the house, along with some cheese and other snacks.
This is a great oportunity to meet two of the most influential winemakers in the East Bay, authors of some of the most creative, bright and elegant Zinfandels we've seen around. Dashe Cellars started their production in the late 90's. They are based in Oakland (4th Street). By using cooler climate fruit, low yielding vines, native yeast fermentations and minimal handling, they make distinctive, sensuous wines that let the vineyards shine through.

All the wines will be available for sale after the tasting.

On SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24, come check out the return of 'Say It Loud!' at it's new location Duende in uptown Oakland. This happy hour function will feature deejay Pat Les Stache spinning over 2 hours of funky groove-orient soul-jazz. Everything from Roy Ayers, Donald Byrd, Gil Scott-Heron, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Gary Bartz and Blue Mitchell, to funky and rare selections released off of Strata-East, Black Jazz, Detroit's Tribe, Mainstream Records and much more. The event will take place from 6pm-8:30pm that will lead right into a live set from the explosive Bay Area trio The Three Mohammads.

THREE MOHAMMADS is the trio of Tarik Kazaleh (oud), Josh Allen (saxophone), and Timothy Orr (drums), came together in 2006 to record music for Nasri Zacharia's groundbreaking film The Tale of the Three Mohammads  to provide an aural collision of free jazz and Arabic music. Continuing to perform live at venues such as Oakland's Stork Club and the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists Hall, their goal is to reach a wide and diverse nontraditional audience. Utilizing free improvisation and the language of jazz within ancient underpinnings, The Three Mohammads explore expressions of the musical past and future for present-day listeners.

Say it LOUD! is a free event from 6-8:30, The Three Mohammads begins at 9 PM and is $15 a ticket.

Best Choice for a
Thanksgiving Paella

Algueira is back! After the success of its last vintage (we had it in our opening list), we bought the 2012 as soon as it hit our shores. This beautiful MencĂa from Ribeira Sacra was fermented and aged in stainless steel, preserving all its cherry-like flavors and a distinctive hint of dried rose petals. Its refreshing acidity and well-measured body makes it perfect for turkey, cranberry sauces and for Thanksgiving paella. The New York Times highlighted Algueira as "one of the producers worth seeking out", and according to the authors of the recent book "The Finest Wines of Rioja and Northwest Spain,  "the wines of Algueira are considered by many the finest and most elegant in Ribeira Sacra". Kenyan Karatu Peaberry Coffee
Small like a pea, its immediately apparent where this coffee derives its name. This Kenyan roast has v ivid grapefruit notes that start the cup as the fresh-picked boysenberry sweetness slowly takes over. The body is medium and the finish will remain on your palate long after your last sip of this exquisite coffee. Available while quantities last in the bodega.
