It’s $52M vs. $380M in Samsung/Apple patent trial
- Sarah Drake, Contributor
Cupertino-based Apple Inc. wants Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co. to pony up $379.8 million. Samsung’s much-lower number is $52.7 million, according to Reuters. The eight-person jury presiding over the trial in San Jose may land somewhere in between or beyond $380 million.
This is the second round of the case. In the first round, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ruled that the $1 billion in damages Samsung was ordered to pay Apple should be revised, saying the figure was not properly calculated.
Apple was victorious in the first trial’s liablity phase when a jury determined that more than two dozen Samsung devices copied several of Apple’s features, like the scrolling function on its devices.
The current trial was put in play by Koh when she claimed the jury miscalculated damages related to more than a dozen of those products and erased about $400 million from the verdict. Samsung still owes Apple $600 million from the initial trial.
The trial taking place in San Jose should last about five more days.
