On the TUNNEYSIDE of SPORTS November 11, 2013 #462 Up next..."Incognito"
After further review...Incognito is an Italian word absorbed in English usage as an adjective or adverb that means "with one's identity concealed". However, a different sense of the word has lately emerged as relationship among teammates has become less concealed. A veteran player has been suspended by the organization for allegedly bullying a younger player. And so "Incognito" became a verb, and one that will persist if more instances of this sort of egregious behavior come to light.
Teasing, kidding and other forms of such behavior have been around a long time. But this behavior became way out of line that it shut down the one intimidated. Each of us has boundaries to protect our dignity and honor. Yet, it is the intimidator who has no boundaries and thus violates another with acts of violence--verbal and non-verbal. The public was made more aware of violent behavior in the cases of sexual abuse of children and young adults.
Such harassment has become more widespread with the advent of social media, giving rise to a new term in the modern lexicon: cyber-bullying. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, it signifies using the internet to distribute untrue, inflammatory, and demeaning information about someone. A common trait of bullies is their contempt for the boundaries of personal dignity. Such bullying has driven many victims to the point of suicide. It doesn't have to happen!
"Harmony At Home" is a non-profit organization well described by its own name. Its mission is "to end cycles of violence and abuse by empowering children and young adults with knowledge, skills and confidence to lead healthy lives'. An enlightened and supportive home atmosphere can teach young people two important things: 1) that one does not need to intimidate others in order to be worthy, and 2) that there are remedies for bullying when one encounters it.
In schools, on teams, or in clubs it helps to have a "buddy system" i.e., someone a troubled student or athlete can go to for help. Many coaches ask older players to mentor younger players for this purpose. Mentoring is a wonderful concept, applicable to anything one does in life. Often when one is being bullied, it becomes embarrassing for that person to speak out. But with a trusted mentor, one does not face the humiliation alone. Harassment and the abuse of others have no place in a civilized society. These are the tools that can defeat it. Never be afraid to cry out: I need help!
Will you demonstrate the character to give or get help as needed?
