Illinois Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage; Missouri Allows Legally Married Same-Sex Couples to File Joint State Tax Returns
Just days after the the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill legalizing same sex marriage, Governor Nixon announced he issued an executive order authorizing the Missouri Department of Revenue to accept joint returns from legally married same-sex couples that also file joint federal returns.Both of these actions come a few months after the landmark Supreme Court decision to strike down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which provided that the word “marriage” meant only a legal union between one man and one woman.
