How to Talk to Procrastinators (and More Answers to Your Questions)

Things have been really crazy with the INC. cover and the NYT piece, so I haven't been able to produce as much content as I like. Luckily, I was able to field some questions over the weekend, so here are some of the answers. Thank you to everybody who tweeted! I'm going to get to as many of them as I can, so be patient ;)

Ask them the honest questions about what actually motivates them. And don’t judge them solely based on being procrastinators. I’m a procrastinator, and I did pretty well. There is a difference between a procrastinator who executes and one who doesn’t. Judging how someone gets to the finish line is the wrong way to think about it, so long as they’re getting there. Some people enjoy the pressure of cramming the night before the test.

I don’t think anything is “necessary.” I’d say that it’s all subjective and about who you are. Personally, I’ll tell you that I’m a humongous believer in mentors. I rarely speak about my weaknesses, but one of the major things I’ve done incorrectly was that I should have payed a lot more attention to mentors in my own career. Mentors speed up the process of learning and, more importantly, mentors open up doors that couldn’t otherwise be opened (or might have taken years to open). I tend to be very self-sufficient and want to do everything on my own, but I count that as a flaw. I encourage the young entrepreneurs reading this to very seriously consider getting a mentor. I’m a big fan of it.

It’s incredible. I mean I’ve literally gotten like 10 free coffees. Now here is why it’s brilliant: because I don’t have a Starbucks account, but now that I have these 10 free coffees, I’m going to have to get a Starbucks account, which means I’ll probably start using the app. So it’s an amazing word-of-mouth/activation/customer behavior play. This is going to force me to join the Starbucks ecosystem, which can only be a good thing for them.

I think all of those things work. Brand stories can come from creative insights; they can come from one creative mind; they can come from a series of events; the truth is that ideas can really come from anywhere. I think the reason so many people struggle to find the story is that they’ve crippled themselves by having only one process for it.

The biggest hurdle I had to overcome was my time allocation issues. I was still doing WLTV, I was still deeply involved in the day-to-day at Wine Library, I was writing Crush It!, my daughter was born the same month we started VaynerMedia, I was beginning to get paid to speak, and I was investing in startups. The way I managed to overcome it was that my brother AJ was able to execute when I couldn’t, allowing us to grow the business. Meanwhile, what I did was the "star-power" thing in order to get us new business. At the end of the day, my brother was the driving force in the early days of VaynerMedia, and he is why it exists today.
