Facebook Now Reaches More Young People Each Day Than The 4 Biggest TV Networks Combined

Here's another chart from the FUTURE OF DIGITAL deck we presented at Business Insider's IGNITION conference this week.
The chart shows the staggering reach and influence of Facebook.
Specifically, the chart shows the "daily reach" of Facebook compared to the four big broadcast TV networks.
As you can see, among older people, TV is still dominant. But Facebook now reaches more young people each day than the big TV networks.

    I think this is not an age issue, this is a generation issue. When Y generation reaches age of 40, the difference(between FB and TV) would be much lower for the older age group.

    In past,when angry with someone fought them.Now just delete them off Facebook. Teaching for young generation now a days to make a Facebook account & name will be Nobody so when see stupid crap people post,can Like it & it will say Nobody Likes This.Facebook is like jail,sit around & waste time,write on walls& get poked by unknown people & only place where it's acceptable to talk to a wall.Any communication or marketing professional needs cross-cultural research & communication skills to be able to succeed in future & a place where young announce their problems to world but not to person they have a problem with & fridge full of food - nothing to eat &wardrobe full of clothes nothing to wear & internet full of sites only on Facebook which is like boys,once understand them they change & adult way of having imaginary friends & it becomes 100 times more entertaining when have work to do & if wish can delete from mind as easy as deleting from Facebook.Delete ,Poke, Like, Limit .Choice is yours... .Without Facebook young probably wouldn't have wished a happy birthday.Welcome to Facebook, where no one is really friend.Believe it or not, everybody has their problems, some just prefer not to discuss them on Facebook.Exams + Facebook = head is in wrong book!

    This comparison is interesting. However, I think it says more about the reach of the four broadcast television stations on young people than on the influence of Facebook on young people. With the reports stating that young people are leaving Facebook (the release of that information at the end of October dipped Facebook stock by 15%) I would love to see comparisons with social media outlets such as Instagram or Snapchat.

    Come on, if you're going to write these sort of articles, I would appreciate you compare the comparable. Concerning the young, the biggest discussion of the moment is FB vs. Snapchat, not FB vs. washed-up TV. Perhaps if we compared FB vs. streaming platforms, we might find more interesting results.

    I totally agree with Mike M. in regards to advertising. Traditional media like TV will continuously surpass non-traditional media. Too many companies think all they need is a Facebook page and new clients will come in drones. A social media site by itself as a marketing tool is useless unless you are driving customers there. There is a big difference between Reach and Frequency and while Facebook may get some Reach, I don't think it is getting the frequency. People join a company's FB page if they are already doing business with them and want new information. You have to create the market sometimes to get ROI and TV definitely does that, otherwise every Fortune 500 company would launch their new products to FB users. Besides, disposable income is within the ages of 49-69 anyway. Millennials and Gen Yers' is not where the wealth of our economy is right now. Boomers control the market!

      Jeff M: Reach is quantity (or percentage) of people (usually within in a particular target group), Frequency is the number of times the message is delivered. Frequency can be controlled/manipulated in a variety of ways on FB, spanning direct ad messaging, sharing, likes, etc. The difference in performance for the client comes down to whether the ad message is welcomed or not by the consumer. If they have a relationship with the brand (or an affinity to it), FB can be a wonderful driver and/or complementer. If they don't, you can hit them an infinite number of times, and results won't change much. You are spot on with where the cash is: it ain't in the pockets of the young.

    Apple as "new media" but not included in PC sales. Did they not make a dent, or was the slide about PC vs. Mac sales? ... so then I keep going, but there's so MUCH here, and so many questions. I stop. It makes one wonder though, given the pace of change and how quickly new "media" comes and old media fades, will marketers ever keep up?

    I'm sorry but what exactly are you comparing here? Reach of what? How are television shows the same as a facebook? Do you mean that advertising on TV has less reach than advertising on facebook? Aren't teen leaving Facebook in droves? I believe that's been covered by BI the last few weeks just like with everyone else Talk about a completely useless chart
