A mural on Almaden Ave. (pictured left) still marks the spot where San Jose's Tied House brewery and bar operated until 2009. Now, the San Pedro Square property is home to the 71-person office of TV ad technology company BlackArrow.

It may seem like a dream scenario to move your office into a favorite neighborhood brewery.
For BlackArrow, a San Jose-based television ad tech company, that became the reality when neighboring cafe and brewery Tied House closed in 2009. The catch: a much-loved beer bar takes some cleaning up.
"It was really bad," BlackArrow CEO Dean Denhart told me. "It stunk, and it was really dusty."
Today, the 10,000 square-foot space is far from ragged. Vaulted ceilings with large skylights now beam in sunlight over open work areas, brightly-colored conference rooms and even a former waiter's stand-turned-office coffee bar.
"We love being on this street," Denhart said. "Recruiting has gotten a little easier. Retention is also better."
BlackArrow was founded in 2004 and located in San Mateo when Denhart took the reigns in 2007. The company was seeking cheaper rent and a more central location by moving to downtown San Jose when the market bottomed out soon after.
Now, the company is growing, offering four product lines for advertisers looking to adapt to rapid change in the world of television viewing. In addition to the 71-person San Jose headquarters, BlackArrow has offices in New York and India. The company also does business in Canada and Europe and plans to expand to Latin America soon.
"We're providing technology for advertisers as the world in which people watch TV is fundamentally changing," Denhart said. "A year and a half ago we had one product."
BlackArrow currently has a total 115 employees and more than $50 million in funding from investors including Comcast Ventures, Intel Capital, Cisco Systems, Motorola Mobility Ventures and Time Warner Cable.
