The entry lobby to the Intuit Campus Center has a high-tech feel thanks to the LCD matrix, but also gives a nod to the environment with lots of reclaimed wood (a theme repeated throughout the project). Jan Penagos, Intuit's workplace design leader, explained at the forum that the idea was to create a "heart" on the campus of 12 buildings separated by surface parking. "The goal was to create a space that was a go-to destination to enhance our community," she said.

As investors are discovering throughout Silicon Valley, there's a lot of life left in the region's more mature -- some would say, dated -- R&D buildings.
For proof, look no further than the Intuit campus, the longtime home for the financial software maker located in Mountain View's North Bayshore.
Intuit is growing here -- even as Google Inc. swoops in to buy or lease just about every other building available -- with plans to build two new, architecturally distinctive buildings.
But last year, it also completed renovations of a 43,000-square-foot building, originally built in the 1980s, that shows just how much you can do with a building that is past the age of turning heads.
The project -- dubbed the Intuit Campus Center -- was the focus of a US Green Building Council networking event and panel last month on the Intuit campus. The event, featuring a panel discussion with project team members, was in partnership with groups including CREW Silicon Valley and AIA Silicon Valley.
The design is courtesy of Gensler, and it was all turned into reality in 35 weeks courtesy of SC Builders, the Sunnyvale-based general contractor. Jones Lang LaSalle did the project management.
The 22-acre site includes just about everything you can imagine -- from a 15,000-square-foot cafeteria (complete with pizza oven), 12,000-square-foot fitness center, 13,000-square-foot conference center, and 3,000-square-foot "innovation gallery." That doesn't count the outdoor improvements, including a sports court and amphitheater. The project is targeting LEED Gold certification.
I got a chance to tour and hear from the players involved (disclosure: I accepted some amazing deep-fried macaroni and cheese balls as part of the soiree). Click the slideshow to see inside some of the cool spaces and to hear from the experts.
And then let me know what you think. We're looking for other interesting (and recently completed) spaces to showcase here. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any ideas.
