Why United Natural Foods is bringing hundreds of jobs to Gilroy

United Natural Foods is going into the South County city in a big way, with plans to build a 450,000-square-foot food distribution center in a first phase and potentially up to 800,000 square feet. The company is a major distributor of natural and organic foods, with its nearest facility in the Placer County city of Rocklin.
I wrote
about the deal with McCarthy Ranch Corp. this morning. This afternoon, I
caught up with Gilroy City Administrator Tom Haglund and Economic Development
Corp. President Tammy Brownlow to discuss what the project means to Gilroy and
what happens next.
So, how many jobs?"Our understanding is about 250 to 300 new jobs to Gilroy," Haglund said, most of which would be warehouse worker positions. "The pay is much better than minimum wage, and these are full-time jobs."
Gilroy has a sizable food industry, with major companies such as Gilroy Foods (owned by Olam International), Monterey Gourmet Foods and Silva Sausage employing hundreds in the city.
But Haglund said the bigger picture is the growth of industrial jobs in general as companies discover the city's strategic location and business-friendly environment.
"It really kicks off Gilroy and the recognition of Gilroy's proximity to the Bay Area and Central Coast, Central Valley," he said.
Added Brownlow: "The company's told us they're good-paying jobs for distribution. As with manufacturing, distribution centers today are highly automated. It's not so much manual order picking. There's a good deal of training. And there's also a transportation component."
