Larry Ellison and his
Oracle Team USA yachting team staged the most dramatic comeback in sailing
history to win the final America's Cup race.
The victory ratifies decisions by Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corp., in the last
week to blow off two major corporate events to focus on his sailing team. During
that interval, Oracle Team USA put together a string of seven wins to force
Emirates Team New Zealand into a final race today.The win gives Ellison yet another opportunity to transform yacht racing (for better or worse) as he's done with this America's Cup. Sailing purists who long for the grace and sex appeal of traditional monohull boats cringed at the 50 mph speeds achieved by the wing-sail, foil-hulled AC72 catamarans Ellison chose for the cup this year.
Either way, Oracle shareholders and business partners this week were again forced to accept a fact of life for those who have connected their fate to Ellison's: When his passion is directed at the company, he can make it go. When his passion points elsewhere, he goes away.
Ellison bailed on his keynote
address at Oracle's annual customer conference Sept. 24 to watch as his Oracle
Team USA pull even. Last week Ellison was absent from Oracle's quarterly
earnings conference call with analysts so that he could be close to the racing,

His decision to skip the keynote address left at least some of the more than
60,000 people registered to attend this year's OpenWorld disappointed."I can understand his dedication to the racing, but it does send an interesting message to the audience here about his priorities," attendee Mason McDaniel told Reuters.
