Elon Musk took a jab at Amazon.com
Inc. CEO Jeff Bezos' competing
spaceflight venture, Blue Origin, telling
Space News that he'll sooner see "unicorns dancing in the flame duct" of a
rocket before the company makes it to space.
Musk's SpaceX and Blue Origin are in a battle over the lease for Kennedy
Space Center's Launch Complex 39A, a vacant shuttle launch pad that SpaceX wants
to take over.In July, Blue Origin sent NASA a proposal to convert the pad "into a commercial spaceport available to all launch companies."
SpaceX had requested an exclusive-use deal for its Falcon rockets until last week, when it changed its tune and said it would be open for sharing the pad with others.
Musk, in explaining why he changed his mind about sharing the pad, took the chance to taunt Bezos.
"(Blue Origin) has not yet succeeded in creating a reliable suborbital spacecraft, despite spending 10 years in development," Musk told Space News. "If they do somehow show up in the next five years with a vehicle qualified to NASA's human rating standards that can dock with the Space Station, which is what Pad 39A is meant to do, we will gladly accommodate their needs. Frankly, I think we are more likely to discover unicorns dancing in the flame duct."
Jeff Bezos, on the other hand, is
quite confident Blue Origin will make it to space.
"That team is doing a bang-up
job," he told PC
Magazine. "I can't give you an exact date when we'll enter into commercial
operations, actually flying people up into space, but we're close."
For NASA, the debate over the lease for Launch Complex 39 is not only
