Last friday's rate update from Greg Vanslow

Good afternoon,

The Fed announced last week that things aren’t so great and they are not tapering QE3.

The attached rates are down as much as 0.5%. Nice.

The 10 year treasury closed at 2.62% down from 2.90% two weeks ago.

The Dow is at 15,258 down from 15,376 two weeks ago.

The dollar is sitting at $1.34/Euro, which is the worst it has  been in a while. No surprise.

Wine

Sherman & Hooker's Shebang! "Sixth Cuvée- Old Vine Cuvée" Red Blend ($11.99 @ Wine Club and K&L)  I’ve had a few vintages of this. Quite enjoyable.

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "*Best Buys* Shebang! is the appealing project of Morgan Twain Peterson, son of the long-time Ravenswood winemaker Joel Peterson. His objective is to fashion innovative, old vine cuvees that satisfy the most demanding wine enthusiasts. (Distributer) Doug Polaner is his name, and high quality wines in all price ranges is his game. I have been tasting with Polaner over a number of years, and these notes represent his very finest value selections." (08/2013)

2006 Raymond Lafon, Sauternes 375ml (elsewhere $35) ($17.99 @ K&L) What a great deal on Sauternes. I have some of this but paid a lot more several years ago. This is sweet, if you can’t tell from the description. A great food wine.

2006 Raymond Lafon, Sauternes (elsewhere ($60) ($34.99 @ K&L)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at Southwold ’06 Bordeaux tasting. It is adorned with a straightforward, no frills Sauternes nose, good definition, barley sugar, lemon curd and honey, gaining in intensity in the glass. The palate is well-balanced, good freshness here with notes of honey, marmalade, a touch of ginger; nice cohesion and very good weight towards the finish. It needs another couple of years to tuck its shirt in, but I admire its focus and breeding. Very fine, though it is marred by just a touch of volatility on the finish. Tasted January 2010." (07/2010)

91 points Wine Spectator: "Unctuous, sporting apricot, glazed pear and creamed melon flavors, with a lush coconut-tinged finish. A nice floral hint weaves in and out, adding length and vivacity, too. Drink now through 2020. (Web-2011)"

Jancis Robinson: "Second bottle was definitely richer with real nerve and tingle and exciting depths. Luscious and almost unspittable. Lovely unctuous stuff with real nerve." (01/2010)

2011 A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir ($14.99 K&L Wines)

In the sake of full disclosure we are not breaking any new ground by sending the A to Z Pinot Noir out to you in an e-mail. We’ve done it before and I bet we do it again. I’d bet that you seen this wine around, and I’d bet a smaller amount that you’ve probably tried it once or twice over the years. Sometimes the wine can be ho-hum - after all it is a large scale Pinot Noir that can taste like, well, a large scale Pinot Noir. But in special years it can be that large scale Pinot that is just delicious and wildly affordable which is exactly what we think this 2011 vintage is. From fruit grown in both the Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon this combines the sassy, acid driven vibrance of the vintage from the North and the richer, balancing texture and darker fruit from the south into one amazing Pinot. With its inviting white cherry, loganberry and cassis fruit and a touch of sweet, woodsy spice the nose here is on the delicate side but it is not without its charms. Juicy and surprisingly round on the palate this is packed with tons of blue/black fruited goodness and enough complexity to keep you interested through an entire bottle but enough likeable simplicity to not get in the way of anything else you may be doing either. In fact I think it is about as perfect of an affordable cocktail Pinot as it gets. A little boysenberry, a little sandalwood, a slight touch of some wet Oregon ferns and a whole lot of soft, melty Pinot tannins and you have maybe the best $15 Pinot we’ve had in the store all year (Bryan Brick, K&L).
