Major Mountain View commercial proposal: Theaters, fitness, office, hotel for 15-acre Shoreline parcel

Mountain View's 30-year-old Cinemark Century theaters could soon give way to
a "destination" project featuring a new cinema complex, luxury gym, office space
and hotel under early plans revealed Thursday.
SyWest Development, the
development arm of San Rafael-based Syufy Enterprises, will soon submit plans
for the project at 1500 North Shoreline Blvd, officials said. It's the latest
blockbuster redevelopment play for Syufy, which has also disclosed efforts in
recent weeks to re-do old
theater sites in Redwood City and San
Jose.
The 15-acre Mountain View site
is located near the high-profile intersection of Highway 101 and North
Shoreline, across the street from the Computer History Museum and in a neighborhood thick
with Google Inc.-occupied properties.
The two-phased project would see a new 16-screen Century movie theater and a
VillaSport Club and Spa built first. A yet-to-be-named hotel operator and
undetermined amount of office space would be built later, as part of Phase
2.
Bill Vierra, president of SyWest
Development, in a statement called the proposed anchors "best-of-class
operators" whose "combined presence will transform this location into an
unrivaled regional destination in the Mountain View community and Silicon
Valley."
The site has a long history as a theater location: It was first a drive-in
built in 1962. In 1984, it became a multi-screen theater that continues to this
day.
The new theater would be a
significant modernization: Tim
Warner, CEO of theater operator Cinemark, said in a statement the complex
would feature the company's "NextGen" concept -- huge screens, cutting-edge
sound systems and enhanced picture technologies.
