Dear alan,
Preventing osteoporosis is not just about taking calcium
supplementation. The same with treating osteoporosis, which is not just
about pharmaceutical intervention.
I will be speaking about this topic on Tuesday
September 10th from 7:00-8:30 pm, at the Saratoga Public Library.
Please see the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter for
details.
Here are some of the main areas we will be discussing at the seminar.
First and foremost, we need to realize that bone is a LIVING tissue. Even
though it provides us with structural support, it also plays a role in the
production of red and white blood cells, along with the storage of
minerals. Therefore, the support of bones requires the same lifestyle
practices as supporting the other systems of our body.
This includes proper nutrients; not just calcium, but others such as B
vitamins, magnesium, boron, vitamin D, and vitamin K. This is why dairy
products are not the only foods to eat for bone strength. Leafy green
vegetables are even better because they contain the other mentioned nutrients.
Foods that support bone health include:
- Spinach
- Broccoli
- Collard
Greens
- Swiss
Chard
- Kale
- Bok Choy
- Almonds
- Sesame
Seeds
There are also medications that increase the risk of
osteoporosis. This includes Zantac and Pepcid (drugs commonly taken for
heartburn), Actos and Avandia (commonly taken for diabetes), and prednisone
(a steroid used for eczema and other inflammatory conditions).
As with any health condition, treating diabetes, heartburn,
and inflammation naturally and by finding the cause, reduces the risk of
unnecessary side effects.
A major key that I get across with my patients who have osteoporosis, is
that the primary goal is to reduce the risk of FRACTURES. This means that
we cannot overlook the role of exercise, especially ones that improve
balance, strength, and flexibility.
Unfortunately, conventional medicine is too quick to offer medications like
Bisphosphinates (i.e. Fosamax, Boniva, & Actonel), which by themselves
do not necessarily achieve this goal. They also are come with a list of
serious side effects.
Besides a bone density (DEXA) test, there are specialized blood and urine
tests that can assess the body's nutrient status, such as vitamin D, B
vitamins, calcium, and vitamin K, and also assess bone turnover. These are
great tests to guide the effectiveness of any treatment regimen.
F0r more details, I hope to see you at this seminar. Please
forward this newsletter or seminar invite to anyone who may find this
information helpful.
As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
