Greg Vanslow's wine and mortgage interest rates I like that combo

Good afternoon,

A brutal week for bonds.

Three straight days of heavy losses ending with the highest 10 year treasury yield since July 29, 2011.

This has been driven by a few things including fear of QE3 winding down.

The Dow closed at 15,081, down from 15,425. A big drop.

Most of the attached rates are up about .25%, but some are down.

Wine

2010 Amizade Godello (Galicia) - $9.99 @ Garagiste (nicki@garagistewine.com, email only) – I really like Spanish white wine. My favorite is godello. Rich, creamy wine. I’ve never seen it this cheap.

Tanzer’s IWC (Josh Raynolds): “Greenish yellow. Pungent, nuanced nose displays tangerine, lemon pith, anise and herbs.  Dense and sappy, with good breadth and depth to the lively flavors of citrus and orchard fruits. Finishes tight, spicy and energetic. At only 12.5% alcohol this drinks very easily. This project is a joint venture between importer Andre Tamers and the Do Ferreira winery. 89pts”

2011 Tilia Torrontes ($7.99 @ K&L ) White wine from Argentina

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Tilia Torrontes is sourced from Cafayate in Salta and sees no oak aging. It has an attractive bouquet of yellow plum, dried flowers and grapefruit that is very well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with light peach notes on the entry. It needs a little more tension, especially on the finish, but it is still endowed with lovely light apricot and buttery notes towards the finish. Fine. Drink now."" (10/2012)

89 points Wine & Spirits: "This is remarkable in its structure, a firm and steadfast presence from which all its tropical fruit flavors and floral scents emerge with grace. A serious torrontés for sardines." (06/2013)

Wine Spectator: "Light, with an earthy undertone to the tangerine, melon and floral notes. (Web-2012) "

2011 Tilia Malbec Mendoza ($7.99 @ K&L)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Tilia Malbec, once again from Eastern Mendoza and Uco Valley raised in oak for six to nine months; has an attractive, comparatively complex bouquet of blackberry, wild hedgerow, crushed stone and black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with tense, edgy tannins on the entry that counterpoise the tight ball of blackberry, briary and minerals with style. It builds nicely in the mouth, leading to a firm, black olive-tinged finish that lightly grips the mouth. Excellent. Drink now-2018." (10/2012)

89 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red-ruby. Blackberry, black cherry, licorice and a whiff of tar on the nose. Sweet, smooth dark fruit and licorice flavors are given shape by ripe acidity. Nicely creamy in the middle. The tannins lightly dust the teeth on the long finish. A real overperformer: this appealing malbec is better than a lot of chunky, overripe and/or overextracted examples of the variety at considerably higher prices." (04/2013)

Wine Enthusiast: " *Best Buy* The bouquet is scratchy but nicely aromatic, including hints of spice to go with ripe berry scents. The palate is jammy and home to rooty berry, mild spice and very light oak flavors. " (08/2013)

Wine Spectator: "Ripe yet focused, this shows layered flavors of spice and brick dust framing the jammy blackberry and boysenberry notes that stretch out in the finish." (11/2012)

2008 La Belle Inconnue Bourgogne Rouge (Previously $18) ($9.99 @ K&L)

Lovely, bright and surprisingly serious Bourgogne rouge, in the style of a Gevrey Chambertin. We cannot tell you who crafted this wine, but it has Becky Wasserman's name on the case, and sells for a fraction of what it would with the more famous name on it. This beautiful unknown is a good deal more serious and far less manipulated than most all of the Pinot Noirs in this price-point. If you are a fan of fruit-bombs and rich, California style Pinot, just move on. This is not for you. But if, like me, you love Burgundy, and wish you could drink it every night, but have not yet won Lotto, then this is exactly your cup of tea! And best of all, just as the wine is opening up and drinking beautifully, the price has dropped substantially. SCORE! (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer, 07/13)
