Exclusive: Google set to lease former Mayfield Mall in Mountain View in biggest deal of 2013

We first told you the search giant was getting close to a deal back in June. But tenant improvement work on the 500,000-square-foot complex, now called San Antonio Station, has apparently begun, according to county records.
Most important: A notice filed with the Santa Clara County Clerk's office lists Google as the lessee doing tenant improvements on the property, which is located at 100 Mayfield Ave. Devcon Construction Inc. is doing the work. I reviewed the notice, which was recorded Tuesday, in person.
As a caveat, that doesn't necessarily mean the ink is dry on a lease, I'm told.
But it does mean a deal is likely in the final stages, at the very least. Although Google declined to comment on this deal, it is unlikely that the company would commence work on the project if a deal was not close at hand.
Also, getting a read on Google's real estate activities is notoriously tough. The company started construction on its 1.1 million-square-foot Bayview campus, only to put it on hold in recent weeks.
Google declined to talk about its San Antonio Station plans. I wasn't able to reach Four Corners Properties, which purchased the site along with Rockwood Capital LLC for $90 million about four years ago. Cornish & Carey Commercial Newmark Knight Frank's Jack Troesden, who is leading the leasing effort with colleague Kevin Cunningham, didn't return a request for comment.
Whether — and when — Google would take the property has been a major topic of discussion within the commercial real estate community.
