Fall Foliage trip- where do you go?

Road Trips2

It’s time to escape the rat-race for a day and take a relaxing drive along a mountain road. The air is crisp and clean and the leaves are singing their final song for this season.
Recharge your batteries by planning a short car trip. You can take a day off of work or plan it for a weekend day.
So what’s the first thing you need to do? Look down in the Resources area and find a good route in easy driving distance. Then plan your day by asking:
  • Will you be gone for an hour or two or will you be gone most of the day?
  • Should you pack a picnic lunch or will there be a fun place to eat?
  • How frequently do you want to stop? Will there be gas and restrooms along the way?
  • Will you be planning on just driving or will you stop at a park and go for a hike?
Some things to remember to bring:
  • Water
  • Toilet paper
  • Camera
  • Extra batteries, film, SD cards
  • Notebook to write down where you were and what you saw
  • Snacks
  • Sweatshirts or jackets in case the weather turns quickly
  • Flashlights
USA Today published their list of five steps for a great road trip.
  1. Purchase a road atlas that highlights scenic routes. (yes, the “dead tree” kind. Believe it or not, you might drive out of range for GPS or cell phones)
  2. Avoid truck routes and interstates whenever possible. (sometimes, you have to just to get to the good places, but see if you can find old highways to minimize the super slabs.)
  3. Check your brakes and tires before leaving and be especially careful on rural and mountain roads.
  4. Get help with scenic route planning from the U.S Department of Transportation’s National Scenic Byway Program.
  5. Share your experience with friends and family.(makes it more fun to share, and you’ll have fun remembering where you went)

There are a number of online websites to help you plan your day trip.

  2. FreeTrip.com
  3. RoadTrippers.com
  4. Byways.org

Do some research by talking with other locals or look up online to find out when the color show reaches its peak. Of course, you don’t have to time your day trip for that. Sometimes it’s nice just to get out and look at the view.
What is your favorite destination for viewing fall foliage?
