The rumors are true: Instagram, Facebook's photo-sharing app, has launched a 15 second video feature.
At a press event at Facebook Inc.'s headquarters in Menlo Park, Instagram co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom showed off Instagram's new video capabilities, dubbed Video on Instagram.
Here's what you need to know:
  • Video on Instagram, available on iOS and Android devices, allows users to take and upload 15 second videos from the application.
  • The app features 13 custom filters that can be added to the video and allows users to select the thumbnail they want to represent the video.
  • Systrom said Instagram teamed up with video scientists to incorporate a 'cinema feature' that adds stability to videos.
  • Videos can be shared to Facebook and other social media accounts just like Instagram photos.
Systrom also announced some updated stats about Instagram. There are now 16 billion photos shared on the application, with 1 billion likes every day and 130 million people using the tool every month.
The addition of video to Instagram helps pit Facebook against other video sharing services, most notably Vine, Viddy, Socialcam and 12Seconds. Vine, which allows for 6 second looping videos, recently announced that its iOS app has been downloaded more than 13 million times.
Facebook's stock was down 2.2 percent after the news.
