The new Galaxy S4 smartphone that Samsung is expected to unveil on Thursday is rumored to have a 5-inch screen compared to the 4-inch display on the rival iPhone 5.
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Samsung Electronics Co. is expected to unveil the next version of its Galaxy S line of smartphones this week, as the Korean electronics giant looks to maintain its newly won spot on top of a brutally competitive mobile-device market.
The latest device from Samsung (KR:005930) is expected to launch later this spring — likely giving it a long, early jump against the next iPhone from archrival Apple Inc. The two companies have become locked in a battle for supremacy in the lucrative market, largely overshadowing the many other device manufacturers that end up sharing smaller pieces of the smartphone pie.
For Apple (US:AAPL) , a growing number of investors are worried about that position, as the once-pioneering iPhone faces stronger competition — especially in parts of the world where it has a cost disadvantage against companies like Samsung, which offer more low-cost devices.
Apple shares slipped more than 2% to close at $428.43 on Tuesday afternoon after Jefferies & Co. cut its price target on the stock to $420. Analyst Peter Misek cited the up-coming launch of the new Galaxy as a competitive factor, as well as concerns about the low-end iPhone that Apple is believed to be developing.

The event scheduled for Thursday evening in New York City will focus on Samsung’s next high-end offering. The company is expected to use the event to unveil the Galaxy S4 smartphone. The launch date for the device remains unclear — though Samsung launched last year’s S3 in late May.
That would likely put it ahead of the next iPhone — which analysts don't expect until later in the summer or early fall. Data from Strategy Analytics shows that the predecessor Galaxy S3 last year managed to outsell the iPhone in its first full quarter on the market — helped by the fact that Apple didn't launch its iPhone 5 until late September.
Or, as Glen Yeung of Citigroup put it: “I really doubt it is a coincidence that Samsung is launching in a quarter [when] there is nothing coming from Apple.”
Last year, the Galaxy S3 was the best-selling smartphone in the world during the third quarter, according to Strategy Analytics. The iPhone 5 took the top spot for the fourth quarter, but the companies were nearly neck-and-neck for the combined periods constituting the last half of 2012.
The next version of the Galaxy S series is expected to feature a larger, 5-inch screen and quad-core processor. Several gadget blogs have reported that Samsung may incorporate eye-tracking capabilities in the device, to automatically scroll content for users.
