Stanford University’s spring online course offerings will include more than the usual computer science and engineering classes.
Courses in political science, the humanities and public health will be among the approximately 20 online classes starting in April, according to the university.
While some classes will only be available to Stanford students, many will be free and open to the public. Check out the four you should be taking this spring in the slideshow, right.
Stanford has been a breeding ground for online-education companies offering massive open online courses, also known as MOOCs. Udacity, Coursera and NovoEd were all founded by former and current faculty.
Though none of the open courses are eligible for college credit, efforts are under way to change that. California lawmakers are considering a bill that would order public universities to grant credit for some online classes, and in February a national college-credit assessment organization gave their stamp of approval to five Coursera courses.
