The 4 Hours I Need 16 Times a Year to Run my Businesses
I’ve been known to talk about hustle.
I’ve been known to talk about working all the time (as long as you keep family first). I’ve even been known to say that my favorite
number is
247,365 (24/7 365… get it?). But something else I want to be known for is my
wider perspective on business. Using LinkedIn,
Medium, and my new blog over the
summer, I’ve definitely been able to do a lot more storytelling, and I’m proud
of that, so here goes my next thought:Yesterday, for the span of four hours, I wouldn’t have cared if wine or social media had completely disappeared.
And the reason for this is because I was watching my beloved Jets squeak out an 18-17 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Eat that, Darrelle Revis). I want to make sure that everybody is trying to find that outlet. Nobody stresses more about the health of their business and the health of their family than me, but for those four hours something actually incredible happens.
My dad literally could have texted me during the second half of that game while the Jets were battling and told me that all alcohol had been banned forever from the United States, and I would have looked at it, moved on, and focused on whether Jeff Cumberland was going to catch a pass over the middle.
25 minutes later, Kelly McCarthy, the incredible Managing Director of VaynerMedia, could have texted me and said that the United Nations had decided to ban all social network sites (let’s just say that the effect on VaynerMedia would be profound), and I just would have glanced at it in passing before returning to paying dramatically more attention to whether Antonio Allen could stay into his coverage.
You see, it’s super important, whether it’s fishing, or gardening, or music, to have that four hours or 90 minutes, once a week, or 16 times a year (like I do), when you just couldn’t care less and your passion overrides any of your business interests. What it allows you to do is reset, escape, and, more importantly, have that moment when you can empty your bucket.
The “empty the bucket” moment is something I’ve talked about before, and it absolutely crucial in achieving the kind of work/life balance you need to give you all when it matters most.
