San Jose Earthquakes soccer stadium opening delayed (again) until 2015

The San Jose Earthquakes on Friday announced that a new
$60 million privately-financed stadium in the professional soccer team's
namesake city has been further delayed from late 2014 to 2015.
A news release for the team cites "continuing complications" on construction
at the 18,000-seat stadium site near Mineta San Jose International Airport.
At the time of the team's
stadium groundbreaking in late 2012, the new venue was slated to open ahead of
the 2014 season, which runs from March through October. In late July, the
team announced that unforeseen construction challenges with underground
vaults and basements on the stadium site were forcing the team to delay opening
until late 2014.
Now, the team says additional challenges have arisen during efforts to
connect the stadium to city sewers and complete additional utilities work.
"Without the certainty that we
can open next year, we felt that the best decision would be to move the opening
to the start of 2015," said Earthquakes President Dave Kaval in the team statement
Friday. "We are obviously disappointed, but we are more committed than ever to
build a first-class venue that we know our fans deserve.”
The team also directs fans who have pre-purchased tickets for games
anticipated to be held at the new venue to contact the Earthquakes front office
