But since I plan to buy the new iPhone 5S when it becomes available on Friday, I only loaded it on my iPad mini. After all, why waste time uploading something that will come with the new phone?
Here are some first impressions, based on swiping, tweaking and playing with the new OS until late into the night. It is by no means a full review but I have some likes and dislikes right off the bat.
THINGS I LOVE
Look and feel: There are lots of folks out there on social media who apparently hate the new icons and new look of iOS 7. I didn't like it when it first popped up, either, but quickly realized that the problem was a mashup of old and new-style icons and wallpaper. Swapping to one of the new dynamic wallpapers (which some complain makes them feel seasick as shapes move around) made a huge difference to me.
But it is especially jarring to
see staid old New York Times and Wall Street Journal front page icons on Apple
design chief Jony Ive's new
palette. These and other clashing styles will likely be resolved in coming weeks
and months as third party apps adapt to the new look.
Overall, iOS 7 feels less cluttered to me and easier to navigate. It also
seems faster but I have read others complain about lag times in the touch
interface. I had no such problems nor did it seem to take longer to switch over
to the new operating system than it has in the past.iTunes Radio: This is actually a love-hate thing but I like the fact that I can now get a steady stream of the music that I like through Apple's music player. I tried a few channels, moving from garage rock to jazz before deciding that the soothing ambient channel helped me get through the confusion of learning a new system.
