I own a lot of sleeping bags, since my boys and I do a lot of winter camping we use these often and are very aware of which ones are good, great, and which ones where not worth buying.
One particular bag is a favorite which I almost did not buy since it was too expensive, but it was the only one at the store at the time so I paid a lot and bought it anyway, and it really was worth the money.
This is one of two that I try to always have with me on those twenty below nights in the woods, since sleep is elusive when icy cold is biting at you.
My wife pulled all of my sleeping bags out of storage in preparation for fall's cold weather and hung them on the clothes line for a little bit of fresh air and sunshine before we start using them on our next trip.
Earlier today I was reading in my recliner when I glanced out the window to see someone heading across my yard with my favorite sleeping bag under her arm.
Well I thought, we cant allow people to start stealing stuff out of our yards, so I grabbed my son and my van keys and headed down the road to find this poacher of favorite sleeping bags.
And within about 4 blocks we did find her, she was not some kid out pinching things for the thrill of it but rather she appeared to be someone who had been outdoors for quite some time.
I was surprised since we dont generally have homeless people up in this part of the country, it is generally too cold so they head for southern climates and to larger cities, maybe that is where these people were headed. They appeared to have everything they owned on their backs or under their arms.
When I asked about the sleeping bag she apologized and said that she needed a blanket.
I quickly realized that she needed my favorite sleeping bag much more than I did, after all, it does get very cold at night and there is nothing like a great sleeping bag on a cold night.
So I told her that she was welcome to keep it, and she thanked me and continued to head south at a brisk walk, and I headed home.
Home to my comfortable recliner where I have been thinking all afternoon that I really should have done more to help her, more than just letting her keep a sleeping bag.
Hopefully she will have a comfortable night tonight and every night in her new sleeping bag, and hopefully the next person she comes across will think to give her some money for food as well, or a roof to sleep under, like I should have.
