Greg;s rate sheet and wine tips

Good afternoon,

It’s been a dull week. Thankfully.

The Dow closed at 15,376 up from 14,922.

The 10 year treasury closed at 2.90% down from 2.94%.

The dollar is down to 1.31/Euro.

Next week will not be dull.

The long awaited, highly anticipated Fed statement will come out on Wednesday around 2:00 et. A press conference with Fed Chief Bernanke will follow at 2:30 et. There almost certainly will be a large reaction in the mortgage market to the statement. The other economic events next week will struggle to compete for attention.

Industrial Production will be released on Monday.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI), the most closely watched monthly inflation report, will come out on Tuesday. CPI looks at the price change for those finished goods which are sold to consumers.

Housing Starts will be released on Wednesday, and the Existing Home Sales report is scheduled for Thursday.

Philly Fed and Empire State will round out the Economic Calendar.

Stochastics favor short term floating, but with all those market movers next week floating is risky.

Wine

Bedrock Sherman & Hooker's "Shebang" Red Wine Sixth Cuvee N.V. - $11.97 @ Artisan Wine Depot -

"The NV Shebang IV bursts from the glass with masses of dark, plump fruit. This juicy, mouth filling red, delivers incredible quality for the money in an up-front generous style meant to be enjoyed over the next year or two. The main varieties are Petite Sirah, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. If there is a better value in California wine, I would like to know about. This is a ridiculously delicious wine for $12 a bottle." - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2012)

A couple Cabernet Franc from an area known for Cabernet Franc. Bourgueil is softer than California Cab Franc. And more ageworthy.  I’m a fan.

2011 Domaine Les Pins "Les Rochettes" Bourgueil ($12.99 @ K&L Wines)

Wine Spectator: "Bright and fresh, with good savory, olive and chalk notes weaving around the core of red and black cherry fruit. Offers a brambly feel on the finish. Not dense, but defined, showing excellent typicity. " (05/2013)

K&L Notes: A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight to drink. Domaine les Pins has been family run for five generations. They are a small artisanal producer which oversees every stage of the production from start to finish themselves. They have roughly 30 hectares of Cabernet Franc spread out through the Bourgueil and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil regions. They practice sustainable farming and each and every vine get singular attention throughout the year. Vines of an average age of 25 years are planted in sandy, clay and gravel soils. After harvest they are de-stemmed, sorted and put into tank for spontaneous fermentation to begin. After being pressed off and letting malolactic fermentation happens the wine is put into concrete tank for at least 10 months prior to bottling.

2011 Domaine Les Pins St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil ($14.99)

Wine Spectator: "Shows the lighter profile of the vintage, but remains pure, sleek and persistent, with a tobacco leaf note shading the core of plum and cherry fruit. Dark olive and anise hints flicker on the finish. Drink now through 2014." (05/2013)

K&L Notes: A touch deeper in color than the "Les Rochettes" from Bourgueil along with a bit more density throughout. A broad mouth feel with a really nice silky tannin component which add to its structure and overall appeal. Lots of fleshy purple fruits and silky spring flowers.
