Arrington hosts in the next few days, expect to hear plenty about government
snooping.
The feisty founder of the blog
and conference made that clear in a blog he posted on Monday in which he wrote, "I'm scared
of our government and I'm disgusted by how little Silicon Valley has done to
fight it."
He followed through in the first
two panels of the event, one with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and the second with Ron Conway of SV Angels.
Conway told Arrington he is concerned about the issues raised by the use of
personal data and communications by government security agencies. But he said he
took on three political crusades before the NSA issue popped up: immigration,
gun control and civic involvement.“I believe that we have to balance national security but there was this thing called 9/11 and you have to balance that with transparency,” Conway said. "If this is an issue you’re passionate about, you should do something."
Mayor Lee told Arrington, "We need more people discussing this issue. At the same time there is an objective here that a lot of people are talking about the balance we have to have. I don’t like personal information being used in egregious ways.”
On Wednesday, Arrington will be
interviewing Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Yahoo
CEO Marissa Mayer, whose
companies are pushing the government to let them share more about what personal
information on users that they are being asked to provide.
He is also slated to interview a
number of Silicon valley venture leaders, including Greylock's Reid Hoffman and David Sze, Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures, Doug Leone of Sequoia and John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
