What to Teach Your Mentor

In his Social Capitalist interview, Michael Ellsberg, author of The
Education of Millionaires, discussed how to develop a relationship with your
mentor. Here’s his advice on how first being of service to your mentor can
strengthen those bonds.
Most people will find a mentor and think, “Can you
answer my questions? Can you do this for me?” Well, surprise, surprise: These
people get asked that all day. So to really standout from the pack, you
systematically cultivate the mentality that instead of thinking one thing –
“What can this person do for me?” – you’re thinking, “How can I add value to
this person's life?”
When you are trying to connect to a mentor, you
may have this idea that he or she is an “all-powerful” deity who doesn’t have
any problems whatsoever. That’s actually false. We are all humans, and I
guarantee you there is some area that you know more about than the mentor that
you want to connect with. That person is human and has problems like everyone
else.
The areas I write about in the book are the big
areas people tend to want help with: money, relationships and health. So, money:
obviously, business, marketing, sales, branding, leadership in a business
context. But don't neglect the other two, relationships and health. You’re not
going to walk up to a complete stranger and say, “Hey, my name is Michael
Ellsberg, can I help you with your relationship?” But I have found that in the
course of getting to know someone over time, that just being a sounding board
for the real stuff people have going on in their lives – their relationships,
their marriages, health issues, really vulnerable stuff – [is important.] … You
know, one of Keith’s key points is the importance of vulnerability, and as you
get into these conversations with people, vulnerable stuff can come up around
their relationships.
If you cultivate the mentality of being there or
being a support for people in those areas that are really close to their hearts,
you will become an invaluable person in their sphere and they will go out of
their way to help you.
