Symphony Silicon Valley

Symphony Silicon Valley
Dear ALAN,

Be part of the action and join us in downtown this weekend. You'll be rewarded with great music.

This week Symphony Silicon Valley finds itself split between two great programs. Verdi's magnificent Requiem graces the stage of the California Theatre (this concert is presented without an intermission), and a quartet of works will be presented in the Center for the Performing Arts as we accompany Ballet San Jose in its mixed bill of fare.

We had to hire 70 string players alone this week. Thankfully the Bay Area has an ample supply of talented musicians for these calendar anomalies.

Remember the old curse 'be careful of what you wish for.' San Jose is going to busy in other ways too as the NCAA Basketball Tournament is taking place so plan your theatre travel time accordingly. Saturday night will be the most difficult from a traffic point of view.

Come on in, the music is fine.

FEATURE STORY

Verdi's Musical Masterpiece Comes to the California

To celebrate Verdi's 200th anniversary, the Symphony Silicon Valley presents this powerful and dramatically moving musical work in the resonant and resplendent California Theatre. The symphony joins forces with Maestra Elena Sharkova and the Symphony Silicon Valley Chorale and four vocal soloists to present this choral masterpiece.

The Requiem begins with the solemn Kyrie and quickly flows to the terrifying and crushing hammer blows of the Dies irae, the musical heart of the piece. The themes move from the awe and majesty of Judgment Day to the tenderness of a prayer for peace. The Chorale sings with hushed reverence in the Requiem aeternam, roar in the Dies irae, and dance lightly through the joyful Sanctus.

This Requiem was composed for the concert hall, not the cathedral, and Verdi brought his considerable skill as an opera composer to the Latin mass. The powerful results are evident in the dynamic rhythms, transcendent melodies, and vivid contrasts he employs to express the powerful emotions created by the text.

This Requiem had a strange birth as Giuseppe Verdi began this Requiem to honor Rosinni, but instead, completed it to honor his dear friend, the great writer and intellectual Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), best known today as the author of the sprawling historical novel The Betrothed. The first performance of the Requiem on May 22, 1874 marked the first anniversary of Manzoni's death.

Our presentation of this seminal work features the talents of four great soloists who are not strangers to the California Theatre stage.  Christina Major (Soprano), Layna Chianakas (Mezzo-Soprano), Christopher Bengochea (Tenor), and Jordan Shanahan (Baritone), are each exciting and dynamic vocalists with countless awards and accolades between them.

Our maestro for the evening is Peter Jaffe, making his Symphony Silicon Valley regular season debut. But Maestro Jaffe is no stranger to Symphony Silicon Valley as he is our stellar ArtSPARK conductor having brought symphonic music to over 30,000 students, and better known to audiences for his exciting work at Target Summer Pops each summer. We are thrilled for this exciting debut, conducting this moving work by the great Italian master of vocal magic.

ABOUT SYMPHONY SILICON VALLEY

Symphony Silicon Valley is the professional symphony orchestra of San Jose.  Founded in 2002, the nonprofit company has progressed from a daring idea to rapidly become the greater South Bay's premiere orchestra and a notable community success story.  The Symphony's artists, nationally recruited, locally resident, with an average performance tenure in San Jose of over 20 years, are recognized as among the best in the greater Bay Area.  Led by an exciting roster of distinguished guest conductors on the European model, the Symphony is an anchor tenant of San Jose's magnificently restored downtown California Theatre, one of Northern California's most outstanding music halls.  Symphony Silicon Valley is setting an example of an innovative business model in the arts -- market driven and financially conservative, with low overhead and the flexibility to match its programming to its support base.  Besides the Orchestra's core Classics programming, the Symphony's other concerts include Target Summer Pops free music festival, five diverse concerts produced outdoors on the lawn and annually bringing nearly 17,000 people out to enjoy totally free and family-friendly music; and ArtSPARK, the County's new arts education program for all elementary students in grades 3-6. This school year the program will serve 33,000 students.
