But Santa Clara-based Intel Capital, led by Arvind Sodhani, was the most
successful VC last year, according to a ranking by PrivCo that is based on the number
of successful exits firms invested in. The rankings are included in a 350-page
annual private tech company report.
The list is somewhat skewed towards firms that emphasize early-stage
investing, presumably because exits at that level could be more numerous. Early
stage startup acquisitions also tend to be less expensive. That may explain why Palo Alto-based Felicis Ventures, led by Aydin Senkut, is ranked No. 2 and SV Angel, led by David Lee and Ron Conway, is No. 3.
It may also explain the absence of
the three of the top four VC firms on another ranking released last month, New Enterprise Associates (No. 1), Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (No. 2) and
Andreesen Horowitz (No. 4). Google Ventures was No. 4 on that ranking by CB
Insights, which was based on the number of investments made last year, and No.
10 on the PrivCo list.
PrivCo VC Deals Manager Alex
Tarantino said there was a record number of exits for what he calls "a newer
generation of venture capital firms" such as Felicis and SV Angel."This new wave of V.C. firms is formed by partners that come from entrepreneurial backgrounds, instead of investment and financial ones," Tarantino said in a prepared statement. "These firms provide startups with extensive guidance in realizing their visions, in addition to financial backing."
