When is color too much?

When is Color 'Too Much Color'?
It's difficult to know!
Whenever I'm writing a new post, I always have to ask myself this question because I like color. I like how it calls attention to things in your post, in a sense, and focuses the reader's attention on the most important details before they decide to read the whole thing.
Sure, bold and underlining works great, but they can get lost in the shuffle of a long post when the reader barely gets pass the first paragraph and clicks 'NEXT!'
It guides them, if you think about it, to a mini summary within your posts, so that they know what they are getting into. However, I recently took a Webinar where it was stated that using color in consumer-targeted posts was a bad idea.
I don't know what to do now.
Excess color comes off as unprofessional but there is nothing wrong with a little bit of color, I think. It adds some spark and pizzazz! Black and white is a classic but too much comes off as boring and dull. My posts should entertain readers, both intellectually and visually, so that they get valuable information but don't fall asleep slugging through it.
Not to mention, giant bulky paragraphs that just make you want to close the page entirely and not even look at the website! If this happens, good luck getting that person back on your site.
Coming off as too care free is horrible but coming off as a stick the mud would be equally bad, right? In the end, it's a game of balance between the serious and the fun loving parts of your life. Can you be fun with a listing, I think so. And serious with an "out there" topic, of course.
Thank God this site has drafts!
So the question still remains, when is color 'too much color'? And when is it not enough?
