Silicon Valley salaries leading the nation yet again (New statistics)


Workers in San Mateo County earn more than three times the national average, ranking them the nation's best-paid workers per capita.

Workers in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties are again among the highest-paid employees in the nation. A new report out from the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the average worker in San Mateo County earned $3,240 per week—more than three times the national average, and $1,100 more per week than the average worker in Manhattan.
Santa Clara County came in third, with workers here earning an average of $1,906 per week.

  1. San Mateo County: $3,240 per week
  2. New York County, N.Y.: $2,107 per week
  3. Santa Clara County: $1,906 per week
  4. Suffolk County, Mass.: $1,724 per week
  5. Fairfield County, Conn.: $1,704 per week
  6. Washington D.C.: $1,703 per week
  7. San Francisco County: $1,694 per week
  8. Arlington County, Va.: $1,625 per week
  9. Douglas County, Colo.: $1,591 per week
  10. Fairfax County, Va.: $1,588
San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are home to some of the largest publicly traded technology companies in the nation, where six-figure incomes are commonplace.
In a separate report published Tuesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that the San Jose metro area registered a 6.3 percent unemployment rate in May. That’s 2.2 percent better than the region’s unemployment rate this time last year.
The southeastern tip of California had the nation’s highest jobless rate in May—with Yuma, Ariz. registering a 30.8 percent unemployment rate and El Centro, Calif. registering a 22.8 percent unemployment rate.
At the other end of the spectrum, jobs are plentiful in Bismarck, N.D., which registered a 2.4 percent unemployment rate in May.
