Dr Kian new event

Dear Alan,

Have you heard of "Metabolic Syndrome"? This is a cluster of any of the following conditions: high blood sugar, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol (high LDL, high Triglycerides, or low HDL), abdominal obesity, and BMI >30. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

The good news is that the treatment and prevention of metabolic syndrome does not involve heavy medical interventions, but more lifestyle modification. Unfortunately, most physicians do not catch metabolic syndrome in time, and do not have a serious conversation with their patients about its prevention.

Often when you have a physical, only blood sugar and cholesterol levels are checked. However pre-diabetes and the risk for heart disease could be caught much sooner than these tests would indicate.

Make sure you ask your doctor to measure your HgA1C, and Fasting Insulin levels. A fasting insulin test, is the single best approach to be proactive about preventing diabetes. Although the "normal" range for fasting insulin test is from 0-20, anything between 10-20 is too high. Ideally, for controlled blood sugar levels, your insulin levels should be under 6.

Another test to request your doctor is called Highly Sensitive CRP (HS-CRP). This is a marker for inflammation. As you may be aware, inflammation is the precursor to many chronic health conditions, such as heart disease and arthritis. Your HS-CRP should ideally be under 1.

Lowering your consumption of grains, eliminating processed foods especially sugar, eating 6-8 servings of vegetables daily, eating 0mega-3 foods such as avocados, walnuts, fish oil and flax oil, and exercising 4-5 times per week, is an excellent way to manage insulin and blood sugar levels, and lower inflammation.

Please join me on Wednesday July 17, at 7:00pm, to discuss the natural approaches to diabetes. This presentation will be at Sports Basement.  Hope to see you there!
