Happy Tuesday
The beginning of
summer always feels full of promise. There is a pause and an expectation.
And for many of us, childhood memories of reading... and reading.
I know it's not technically summer until June 21, 2013 (and that it's
getting colder Down Under).
But it feels like summer here in DC where the temperatures are already
hitting 90 degrees.
The New York
Times had a lovely article on Sunday: What I Read That Summer.
It features mini essays from 12 authors recalling their experiences of
summer reading. The first one is by Louise Erdrich. I can't get her
first sentence out of my head:
"The public
library in my hometown was a hushed haven cooled by slow-beating ceiling
fans."
The "slow-beating" of the fans gets me. That's a perfect
sentence, don't you think?

Despite being a supposed "expert" on corporate blogging, I
often feel overwhelmed by social media and how best to use it to widen
exposure for my work.
In a recent article
Guy Kawasaki lays out what he calls the "gory,
inside details" on how he manages five platforms: Google+ [the
"core" of his social media activity], Facebook [2
accounts], Twitter
[1.2 million followers], LinkedIn
and Pinterest.
He employs the equivalent of one full-time person to help him
(several part-time contributors and a virtual assistant). He spends three
or four hours a day curating, commenting and responding. When he responds
directly, it's "him" and not a stand-in.
Instructive and revealing. Especially his pointers on how to find useful,
interesting content. I've bookmarked his article and am re-reading it.

Internet Everybody Knows You're a Dog
Finally, if you
enjoy stats, veteran Internet analyst (and now venture capitalist) Mary Meeker has
published her latest report in the form of a slide deck.
Although it's titled "Internet Trends 2013," the report is
jammed with stats on everything from healthcare to immigration to Social
Security to the U.S. budget deficit.
The original dog cartoon [Nobody
knows you're a dog] is my favorite. There is still some
truth to it.

Trends Report
Do any of you remember Meeker's groundbreaking The Internet Report,
published in 1995? I had a copy but I seem to have mislaid it.
Internet highlights this year are not astounding, but interesting
nonetheless:
- Mobile
is overtaking desktop
- Wearable
computing (Google
Glass, wearable bands, etc.) will take off
- Google+
is closing in on Twitter as one of the most used social media sites (I'm
using it much more)
- China
leads the U.S. in time spent on mobile and the Internet
As always, I'd love to hear from you. Hit Reply and I will respond.
Yours in summer reading, writing short eBooks and getting it done,
Debbie
P.S. If
you've read this far, thanks for putting up with the blizzard of emails I
sent last week. We're back to our 1st and 3rd Tuesday emails with updates
and useful links.
